Get Moving

In what ways do you enjoy moving your body?

How do you choose to get the blood flowing?

When do you take time to honor your body?

Being active started at a young age for me. My little sister and I would ride our bikes until my Dad called us in for dinner. We would play for hours in the woods behind our grandparents' house. Our parents signed us up for sports as a way to socialize, gain discipline, and be a part of a team. I played baseball as a little girl, gave softball a try, and even a short (very short) stint with cheerleading. In middle school I discovered field hockey and lacrosse and enjoyed playing through high school. Crew became a great source of pride for me during my first year of college and running on the treadmill at the gym was a great way to fight off the freshman 15 (from care packages and late night pizza). When I moved to New York City 7 years ago, running continued to support me in my quest to be thin (health and wellness came later for me). It allowed me to explore the parks and the city in a flexible way between work and classes.

It's the real deal! Taken after running my first marathon in 2010.

The importance of daily movement is monumental. Emotionally it brings calm and awareness into your life. Mentally, you will find you are better able to focus, sort through thoughts, and quiet the mind. Physically you are maintaining flexibility, mobility, and improving the health of your joints and bones. Your lymph is facilitated with its detoxing process through stretching, dance, weight training- you name it!

I am so happy I caved and gave yoga a try. It challenges, inspires, and rejuvenates me everytime!

Waking up an hour earlier each day to give yourself the gift of a movement practice is the best way to start your day. You will have a brighter perspective, loosen any kinks from the night, and be setting in motion (I love a good pun) the commitment to make decisions based on your well-being throughout the day. You are more likely to say "no, thank you" to a colleague that brought donuts into the office when you start your day in a meaningful and purposeful way.

I look forward to supporting you through the process of finding a moving practice that you enjoy and that feeds your body and mind. This is such a personal and individual decision; some people respond to social activities like team sports or fitness classes, while other people thrive on meditation and yoga. I encourage you to explore movement and to not be shy!
